First-date green flags nobody talks about

"He was nice to the waiter," your friend says, like that settles it.
It doesn't. Everyone's nice to the waiter now. It's in the manual. Being nice to the waiter has become the first-date equivalent of putting "I love to laugh" in your bio: true, harmless, and completely useless as information.
These are the green flags nobody puts in the listicle. The quiet ones. The ones you notice on the way home.
He asks a question and then a second question
Anyone can ask "what do you do". The good ones ask what you said next.
The second question is the tell. It means he listened to the first answer instead of waiting for his turn. "Oh, so is the scary finance woman still there?" is worth more than an hour of him being charming about himself.
Watch how long he can go without steering it back to his own stuff. If it's more than two exchanges, that's a man who's actually interested in you, not in the performance of a date.
He's honest about what he wants, and about her
Not "I'm just seeing what happens". Not "I'm open". An actual answer, even if it's not the one you wanted.
"I'm not looking for anything serious" is a green flag if it's true and he said it on the first date. It means he'll tell you things. The red flag isn't the answer, it's the man who has no answer and lets you fill in the blank for six months. There's a field guide to that particular situation if you need it.
Same goes for the ex. He mentions her, because she existed. He doesn't audition for your sympathy about her.
A man who spends dinner explaining how mad his ex was is telling you how he'll describe you at dinner with the next one. A man who says "we wanted different things, she's fine, we're not in touch" is telling you he can end something without setting fire to it.
Bonus points if he says something nice about her. Genuinely. It's the rarest thing on the list.
He's boring in exactly the right places
On time, and doesn't make a thing of it. Boring. Enormously boring. That's the point.
The men who are ten minutes early and don't mention it are the men who'll be where they said they'd be for the next six months. The men who are twenty minutes late with a story are the men who'll have a story every time.
The best green flags are the ones that would bore a stranger. On time, consistent, said what he meant.
Same energy the morning after. "Home safe?" and then nothing else until tomorrow. Not a paragraph. Not a "so, that went well I think?" Not the double text at 1am. One message, then he leaves you alone to text your friends about him. A man who's confident enough to let the evening end is a man who isn't going to need managing.
He doesn't push to come up
He walks you to the door, or to the taxi, and then he says goodnight. He's not sulking about it. He's not lingering with a look. He's just going home, because you didn't invite him in, and that was the end of the sentence.
That's not him not fancying you. That's him hearing what you didn't say. It's the whole of consent in a single unbothered "night then", and it's much sexier than it sounds.
Obviously if you do invite him up, that's a different article.
He brings up testing before you do
Here it is. The rarest green flag in the country, and the one that tells you the most.
"I got tested last month, all clear, by the way." Said lightly, over the second drink, not at the door. No fuss.
Think about what he's just told you. That he's an adult who looks after himself. That he's considered you, specifically, before tonight. That he doesn't find his own health embarrassing. And that he's just handed you the easiest opening you'll ever get to say "same", or to not.
Most men can't do it. Most women can't either. The reasons why are a whole post. Which is exactly why, when he does, you should notice.
The green flag you can see before you've even met
And now the cheat.
There's one green flag you can check before you've ordered a drink. If you've got a clean test of your own, you type in his number, and if he's tested and clean in the last ninety days you'll see his green tick. He'll never know you looked.
It doesn't tell you if he's funny. It doesn't tell you if he's kind to the waiter. But it tells you he did the responsible thing without being asked, and honestly, that's most of the green flags on this page in one go.
No tick? Means nothing. He might not have heard of it. Mention it over dinner. The good ones order a kit from the toilets.
Get your green tick before the next first date.
Quick answers
- What are green flags on a first date?
- He asks a question and then a follow-up. He's honest about what he's looking for. He doesn't trash his ex. He doesn't push to come up. He texts to check you got home. And he mentions being tested before you do, which is the rarest and best one.
- Is it a green flag if he brings up getting tested?
- It's the greenest one going. A man who says "I got tested last month, all clear" on a first date is telling you he's an adult, he's thought about you, and he doesn't find his own health embarrassing. Keep him.
- What's the difference between a green flag and love bombing?
- A green flag is about how he behaves. Love bombing is about how he makes you feel. Green flags are quiet and boring: he's on time, he's consistent, he does what he said. Love bombing is loud and fast: you're the one, after four days.
- Should you sleep with someone on the first date?
- If you both want to, yes, and anyone who tells you otherwise is not your friend. The only real question is whether either of you has a recent clean test. If you've got a green tick and he has too, that's your answer.
Take the test. Check the text. Enjoy the sex.
